Eric Staller was born in New York, in 1947.
He studied at the University of Michigan in 1971 and has a bachelors degree in Architecture. Towards the end of his university years, he began to create sculpture and pieces of performance art. Around the mid 1970s he would create light painting photographs around the dark streets of New York City, he would set up his camera, open the shutter and move throughout the frame, to create some really unique effects and images with the lighting. His first photograph taken with the light painting technique was 'Walker Street', it consisted of him holding sparklers in his hands and walking around the street. He set his shutter speed to one minute, so that is how long he had to draw his path with the lights. He also took this photograph on film, which is really impressive, as he would not have known that it turned out so well until it was developed. This photograph inspired him to continue to work with light. |
I really admire Eric's creativity in his pieces, he can literally turn anything into his canvas and begin light painting, the Volkswagen Beetle is definitely my favourite.
