For this unit I have decided to focus on depicting various stereotypes present within modern Northern Irish culture. I intend on representing or depicting these stereotypes as anthropomorphised animals, ones that I believe accurately share the ‘characteristics’ often associated with each stereotype for each subculture, trend or way of life.
Anthropomophic Animals
I have chosen to focus on anthropomorphic animals for my theme, as I have a great admiration for animals, and strongly wish that humans were more like them, as in my opinion, all animals are innocent creatures, even the likes of animals that most people would consider ‘dangerous’ like lions, snakes, sharks, pit bulks etc…
I would even consider spiders to be innocent, even if I was to freak out if one was in my room. I believe that I personally connect better with animals than I do with most of humanity, as humans can often be selfish and heartless.
I have been exposed to anthropomorphic animals since I was a very young child, as they are common in a lot of cartoons and Disney films that I used to watch, also being illustrated in a lot of children's books that I had when I was little. Even nowadays I would still be exposed to anthropomorphic animals, in the likes of films and anime that I watch, and even in some video games.

Stereotypes
My aim for this unit is to produce a series of artworks using a range of 2D media, (e.g. painting, drawing, digital) that study various stereotypes and labels that humans brand each other with, whether they be for social groups, race or religion. I intend on portraying these often negative views people share for others that they may deem 'outsiders' to their way of life or beliefs, by illustrating them as portraits of animals that possess similar characteristics and mannerisms.
I intend on researching ways that different 'groups' have been discriminated against, more specifically terms and labels that are applied to them, alongside instances they may have been denied their human rights, or other unfair treatments they have possibly endured.
An example of a time that I had witnessed a negative stereotype to a subculture, was when I went to Portrush with my significant other and his family. We took a pit stop at Carrickfergus to stretch our legs, and noticed there was a group of bikers, with their classic leather jackets and even face tattoos, to which my significant other's 9 year old brother Josh, responded with, "Be careful, they will steal your valuables and you could get stabbed".
This was rather amusing as they were tooting their bike horns for some of the younger kids in the area, and they seemed like a genuinely lovely and pleasant bunch of people.
Josh's opinion was clearly based on stereotypes that he had either seen on TV or in a video game.
