Materials
To sew on paper, we must first put the paper on some form of fabric, to strengthen the paper. We used felt, as it is sturdy and thick.
We glued our image from our magazine cut-out onto the felt, using a pritt stick, and now we were ready to begin sewing. |
Now that we were ready to begin sewing, we chose our colours of sewing and embroidery thread, and cut a small amount to start working with. I typically cut my pieces of thread to arms-length, so there isn't too much and so it won't be easily tangled.
We then threaded our needles, it helps if you wet the tip of the thread to get rid of any frayed edges. To begin the sewing process, we then started off by poking the needle through the underside of the fabric, and up through our image, we then continued this process, essentially 'doodling' on top of our image, but instead of pen or pencil, with thread. |
I thought that this technique was very relaxing and therapeutic, and it was fascinating learning that you could sew on something as fragile as paper without it tearing to pieces. It makes me wonder if there are any other materials that we could use as an alternative to the paper, which is quite brittle on it's own without the fabric backing.
