For my theme, I have decided to focus on Structure, as I feel like it has a wider range of potential ideas, and since I am focusing on Northern Ireland for my Fine Art theme, I decided to focus on structure for this subject, to add a bit of variety.
Ideas
For my first idea, I had thought about the natural structures that nature itself creates, as most structures would be considered manmade, like buildings, architecture, sculpture etc.
Some examples of natural structures include

For my second idea, I had thought about looking at particular materials that are the structure of nature, for example, how wool (a typical material used in textiles) is structure of a sheep, as wool comes from sheep.
|
For my third idea, I had thought about taking an inanimate object, perhaps a lamp or an ornament, and replacing a part of it’s structure with a piece of textiles.

I think I am going to choose idea 1, as It was the first thing that had come to my head, and I think it is the strongest of the bunch.
My plan is to embroider either a spiders web or a slither of honeycomb from a beehive, as I am fortunate enough to have the materials for embroidery at home, as it is an activity that I quite enjoy doing. I also think I am going to follow in Ana Teresa Barboza's technique, in having the embroidery not just limited to within the hoop. I have never used this method, so I am looking forward to giving it a shot.
I would have also ideally have presented a final piece on a large clear wall as a background, but hopefully I can manage to still do this from home, I might just have to temporarily take down a couple family photographs on the walls.
It is a real shame that we are limited to what we can make this year due to the pandemic, as I would have loved to perhaps gone out of my comfort zone a bit, and tried an entire new technique that was fresh to me, but without having face-to-face lessons and materials this is rather impossible. I am hoping that next year we can learn these techniques that we didn’t quite get covered this year, as I am quite fond of textiles.
